BIZARRE HABITS OF BIRDS
But, love birds come with diseases too. You need to realize that love
birds have some major health issues that may concern you, and which you
need to take into account. Here are a few health problems that love
birds face commonly.
Psittacine Beak & Feather Disease
This is a major viral disease that attacks love birds and spoils their
health majorly. It is pretty common in lovebirds. Apart from the
lovebirds it is commonly found disease in African Greys too. You would
find the lovebirds being endangered by this disease when they are too
young or when they are kept in the same place with other birds. This
viral infection can make the feather development in lovebirds see
abnormal. The beak development is also hampered in this case. You will
see that the feathers in birds having contracted this disease become
blunt while in some cases it leads to hemorrhage in the shaft.
Pacheco’s Disease
This is yet another viral disease that is found in lovebirds. This can
prove to be fatal to the birds. To diagnose this disease, necropsy
methods are used. This disease generally affects the liver in these
birds and can cause death of the love birds too. It is caused by the
presence of herpes virus in the body of the lovebirds. Extensive
supportive care is the only means of ensuring that the lovebirds are
properly treated and don’t face fatal consequences.
Feather Plucking and Mutilation
Diet given to the lovebirds is very important. You will find that in
case unhealthy diet is given to the lovebirds, they tend to become very
edgy. They start getting bored due to this edgy behavior induced in them
and that might lead them to pluck their own feathers. You will need to
give them a bath regularly, else plucking could also mean they are
trying to clean themselves. An unhealthy environment leads to such
issues.
Proventicular Dilatation Disease
A lot of lovebirds suffer from what’s commonly known as depression. Well
it is not surprising to see depressed birds. These depressed birds tend
to lose weight majorly as they begin showing signs of depression. You
will find undigested food particles when you go to their cage to clean
their stool. In case you see them showing such signs, you probably know
that it is time to take them to the do to get them checked.
