Nectar mix Recipes

Being often asked how I do my nectar mix and what ingredients go into it here is a quick discription of how it is done.

First a kettle of boiling water is poured into a large jug and left to cool.
Then into a 1.25 litre jug a dry mix consisting of :-
3 Scoops of Wysoy (baby food)
3 Scoops of Cane sugar
1 Heaped 5ml spoon of ground Bee pollen
1 Heaped 5ml spoon of defatted Soy protein
1 level 5ml spoon of Pro-Amino ( dietary Amino acid supplement )
1 1/4 level 5ml spoon of Avian Spirulina

All these ingredients are mixed together and the jug is half filled with the cooled water (I usually test this by putting a finger in to test the temperature making sure it is still warm but not hot, the ingredients mix better when warm without killing the vitamins) while stirring gently as vigorous stirring will also kill the vitamins.
Once stirred, 2 dessert sized spoons of clear honey are added while stirring again and the jug is filled up with the rest of the water. It is now left to stand for a couple of minutes and is ready to use.

This mixture is given twice a day and put into clean and washed nectar tubes, a fresh batch being mixed each time.

Outside the breeding season the Soy Protein is left out.
Some people do not like using Honey because of the fear of Fungal spores but I have never found any problem with it.

All the ingredients apart from the sugar, Wysoy and honey are available from "Avian Bird Food Products."

Another thing worth mentioning is all the utensils used for mixing are of plastic or glass as utensils made of metal are said to kill the vitamins in the mix. The scoops mentioned are the scoops supplied with the Wysoy.

This mixture is given to all our Sunbirds, Hummingbirds and Sugarbirds.
