Lovebird and Budgies share a cage?

A lot of bird keepers who have one species of birds want to keep some other species along with their existing birds. Every species of birds has its own charm. Due to the limitations of excess cages they want to keep multiple species of birds together in a single cage. So many people think what if they can put new birds in the same cage with other birds and still do not get any problems.

Many people who are currently having some budgies also want to keep some lovebirds in the same cage. They have a question in their mind, "Can I keep my budgies and lovebirds together? "Can Lovebirds and Budgies live together in the same cage without having any problems"?. The answer to this question is; Lovebirds and Budgies cannot live together.

Lovebirds are slightly bigger in size than Budgies but they have very strong beaks. The can become aggressive towards any other species of birds if put together in the same cage. Budgies have smaller beaks and they cannot defend themselves if a lovebird becomes aggressive towards them. Lovebirds can cut budgies' feet or get them seriously injured if you put a budgie into a lovebird's cage or vice versa.

Lovebirds as the name suggests, are loving birds but only to the extent if kept with lovebirds only. I have not seen any problems with lovebirds living in a colony together. No matter how many pairs you keep together in a breeding colony setup, you will not see any lovebird that has injured any other lovebird. They live together peacefully with other lovebirds in the same cage or colony.

Despite of their good reputation with other lovebirds, they cannot tolerate any other species of birds in their cage. A friend of mine had a colony of lovebirds; One day he purchased some finches and put them into the same cage where lovebirds were living. Next day he saw all his finches had their feet injured by lovebirds and he had to separate them immediately without any further delay.

Lovebirds cannot live only with smaller species of birds but also with other larger parrots like Cockatiels. They can seriously injure Cockatiels and other larger species of birds with their strong beaks. They use their beaks to cut anything inside their cages. They can cut whole wooden cages and can fly away in a very short time. In the same way they can cut toes of other birds if kept together in the same cage.

So it is wise not to keep any other species of birds in the same cage where lovebirds are living. Young lovebirds and budgies if grown together can be safe sometimes to keep in the same cage but it is still a risk for your budgies. Lovebirds are very territorial and they will defend their territory especially in the breeding season and can cause serious injuries to the budgies.

Even if you have a hand tamed lovebird and a budgie, you cannot let them play at the same time without your supervision. You may not know when the lovebird becomes aggressive and do the damage to your little budgie. It is better to arrange separate play times for lovebirds and budgies to make it safe for your budgies. So it wise to keep these birds separate because Lovebirds and Budgies cannot live together.
